Russian All-Stars October 2009
Q: What is the meaning of the name of your new album?
Tom: You know, the life we are living is far from normal. We always feel out of place and alien everywhere. To be honest, we felt that way even before forming the group, already at school. One might say that this feeling of non-normality prompted us to form the group. Humanoid means “human-like”, “man-like”, but still far from normal person. That is why it seemed to us that the name “Humanoid” suits us the best.

Q: Then logically, does the name of the first single “Automatisch” have the similar meaning?
Tom: The idea of the song came to us while we were driving a car. Just think how many times we use the word “automatic”? Usually, “automatic” is cool and good, we use the word in the positive context. Really, all automatic mechanisms make our lives much easier! But as far as the love and feelings are concerned, there is nothing more negative like “automatisch”. That was what we thought of and came up with the song.

Q: Does it mean that this topic personally concerns you?
Tom: Yes, a lot of meetings and relationships in general in the world of show-business are short-lived and shallow, they are almost like automatic.

Q: And outside of the show-business?
Tom: Not everything is so easy here either. Just imagine I have not had a girl-friend for the last two years!

Q: Is it really two years?!
Tom: (laughs): According to my calculations, it seems like that.

Q: OK. Let's go back to the album. Judging by your words, a pessimistic mood prevails there.
Tom: I would not say so. The mood of the album is not really pessimistic. There are a lot of energetic and cheerful songs there. It seems as everything in the album is directed to new images and motives. By nature we are of no way pessimistic. It was never our purpose to make our listeners feel melancholy. Through the sadness in our music we say: hey, people! You are not alone! We understand you perfectly. We all feel in the same way, actually, the same things. Love, offense, anger, rage is the universal language of the humankind. Emotions, feelings are something that unites and brings us together like nothing else. It is true that people are ashamed to express, show and demonstrate their feeling s and emotions and I think here is the main problem of misunderstanding between people.

Q: Why did “Automatisch” become the first single?
Tom: Very Often you write a song and you immediately like it. You understand at once that the song should be a single, you want to show it to everyone as soon as possible.

Q: You have been working in the studio for a long time. What has changed? Have you changed individually and as a group?
Tom: Sure, there have been some changes. We worked on the album for almost a year. We have not spent so much time in the studio before. Now we try to go away from our usual sounding and change the “classical” instruments like guitars into electric gadgets. The album will be new in every sense of the word but at the same time you will definitely feel the real spirit of Tokio Hotel.

Q: The European press calls you “pop-phenomenon”. How do you think the success of Tokio Hotel “generated” the wave of young German groups? Is it easier to follow your steps?
Tom: Yes, I think so. We gave a powerful impulse to new groups. Taking us as an example, producers have understood a very simple and important thing: young groups can earn you a lot of money. Certainly, I can tell you that it was the example of Tokio Hotel that helped everyone who follow us.

The inscriptions for the pictures:

• Bill “Let me also read what Tom is telling you about there”.
• A robot's hand squeezing a human heart is depicted on the cover of the single “Automatisch”. The single is released in two variations: the premium-single where the listeners will find two compositions from the new album - “Automatisch” itself and “Humanoid”, and the “usual” variation of the single where English and German versions of “Automatisch” are recorded.
• The guys got older and more serious. And their new album is the best proof to it.
• Tokio Hotel gave their first concert after a yearly break on the 28th of August in Cologne, in the club “O2” as a part of the promotion of their album “Humanoid”. The concert that gave so much joy to all their fans lasted only 25 minutes but after it the musicians did not leave immediately. They stayed with the fans and answered many questions and gave a lot of autographs. The fans were able to win 700 tickets to the concert but the number of the fans willing to get there was much more than that, and the musicians decided to allow about 300 people enter the concert hall without any tickets.
• It has remained a mystery what Gustav was examining so closely.
• Away with automatic, hurray to acoustic!
• Bill always performs with a fire in his eyes and that is why to be on the safe side he has a bottle of water in his hands.

Tom Kaulitz: That's What You Are, Humanoid!

The release of TH new album “Humanoid” should be on the 5th of October. More than two years passed since the release of their last album. TH guys needed almost a year to record the new CD. One of the guys says that they have never been locked in the studio for so long. Tom Kaulitz tells the magazine “All Stars” about the outcome of their seclusion.
